Wildflowers Make Me Happy ~ Inspirations for Fairy Dolls!

Twinflowers, photo by Robin Atkins
We're nearly at the end of our wildflower season, especially since we haven't had rain for a month. To my great pleasure on our walk yesterday, we discovered that the wee little Twinflowers (Linnaea) are back!!!

A woodland ground-cover, their slender, upright stalks bear two bell-shaped flowers each... white, tinged with pink and delicately fragrant. You can see how tiny they are below... (my fingers are NOT bulbous)!

I guess it's possible to grow Twinflowers, especially in a shaded rock garden. I may have to order some seeds and try to grow them on our property, because it's like being in the presence of fairies to see them.

In the last picture I see inspiration for a doll... The body would be in the shape of the flower. It would definitely be like a fairy doll and very sweet!

  1. Hi Robin
I was intrigued with the Twinflower as I have a very shady area of my yard that is full of wildflowers. I used to dig them up when we had our cottage in Wisconsin and bring them back to my yard. I only dug them from my own property or on a lot where a bulldozer was going in to build a cottage. The problem with a shade garden is there are not many flowering plants. One of my favorites is by now a very large maidenhair fern that I will take a pic of one day and post.

I looked up twinflower on google and it is good as low as zone 3 and we are almost 6 and flowers from June until Sept. I will start looking for it at the nurseries and let you know if I find it.

  2. Robin,
There is a nursery on the east coast that has lots of strange and wonderful herbs and wildflowers. I used to order from them and was happy with what I got. I wish I could remember their name, but I think if you go to herbs and wildflowers their name will come up. I think it started with an L.

We must be getting all your rain. Waiting for the storm/jet stream to move and take us out of the wildness for awhile.

  4. I love this flower. How dainty and beautiful. We have a flower the natives around here call a plantation lily. It has one large heart shaped leaf and darling little white bell shaped flowers that grow out of the stock. I had it posted awhile back. Just the leaves as the flowers come a little later. It covers the floor of my wooded areas. Yours is so colorful. Sharon
