Art in Pairs ~ Same Theme, Different Approach

Once again the quilters have turned on the light, illuminating the benefits of working in pairs. Take a look at the following pairs of quilts. In each pair, a single theme has been explored by two different quilters, one taking a representational approach, the other taking an abstract approach.

These and many more pairs are exhibited currently at the La Conner Quilt & Textile Museum in a show called "Abstracted" by the Fibre Art Network in Western Canada. It's a not-to-be-missed show in my opinion, because of the amazingly high degree of creativity in all the quilts. But hurry, the show closes December 29th.

Why, I wonder, why are they all so incredibly dynamic, compelling, interesting, and in many cases, touching? I think it's because the quilters worked in pairs, agreeing on a theme or subject and approaching it either realistically or abstractly. Obviously they inspired each other. Obviously, their combined creativity is greater than either manages alone.

Ding. Ding. Ding. Immediately I'm thinking about the BJP (now on Facebook), wondering if some of the participants might want to work in pairs, deciding for themselves on a way to do it that would be beneficial to both. It's an idea to consider!

  1. Stimulation and inspiration overload -- magnificent artwork in those quilts!

What a fantastic idea, whether for quilting, bead embroidery, painting .... oh, anything. Thank you for sharing the quilts AND the idea.

The quilts are incredible, especially to a non quilter. The colors are so vivid they reach out to grab me. I think working as a team is an interesting idea. Does each member of the team know what the other will do?

  4. Oh, I so enjoyed seeing these. The creativity is off the charts. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite, they are so gorgeous. A visual feast!

My husband (a photographer) and I (a painter) are planning a series of images in this vein. Working title, Two Oregons (or Two Worlds if it will include other places). Same size and framed the same, but one his photography of a place, and the other my interpretation of that same place. Sometimes I drive him bonkers because I tend to... um... change things, ha ha ha. He likes literal realism, and I tend to paint how I feel about the place, with the freedom to add or subtract as I'm moved. It's so exciting!

I wonder if that same idea would work here... to invite various mediums to be paired up to interpret the same starting point image? What fun that would be!

  6. Would love to see these in person...they are amazing!!! Such a different take on the 'slice' idea! It would be interesting for the BJP...I didn't sign up for the project the past two years...might have to reconsider. For BJP it would be perhaps more 'do-able' with a 2-3 mo timeframe...just sayin'.
