Bead Embroidery, Quilting by Brother Thom!

As promised, here are pictures of Thom's recent BJP creations! All of the pictures are clickable.

I love the size and textural quality to Thom's embellished quilts. He has quite a thing going with these, don't you think?

Speaking of Thom (my brother)... He and Jennifer (his wife) are driving north from where they live in Santa Cruz (CA) to the Oregon Coast tomorrow. At the same time, Robert and I will be driving south. We'll meet in Reedsport, which is a town located in the heart of the Dunes. We have a vacation rental reserved for a whole week.

Thom and I will be stitching away on our bead and quilt projects for most of the week, while Robert treks through the Dunes with cameras in hand. Jennifer likes to walk on the beaches and read. We're all chomping at the bit to get past the packing stage and on the road.

Another perk for this trip, is that Thom and I will take a day to visit BeadBabe49 (Bobbi Kirk), also a BJP member... We get to visit with her, see her pages and shop at both her local quilt shop and bead shop! Wheee!

New book news! I'm in the final stages of proofreading and expect to go to print on about March 15. Cross your fingers that it will be available April 15th! How 'bout that as a way to celebrate tax day!

The title is...

Heart to Hand Bead Embroidery
Fresh Ideas and Techniques for Creating Art with Beads

Thanks to all of you for all of your helpful suggestions regarding the title. As you can see some of them have found their way into my final decision. I'm beyond excited about how it's looking... Color pictures on every page... it's glorious!

  1. I love these, especially the fireworks, they really look like they are exploding. What is the story behind a can of worms?

Sounds like you have a fanastic trip ahead of you.

  2. Your title is perfect, Robin. "Heart to Hand" describes your approach, for sure.

Have a wonderful time in Reedsport....that used to be my old stomping grounds... ;-)

  4. Thom's work is awesome! And I'm so excited I can hardly stand it! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to keep the good weather hanging around until you arrived, but that just means more inside beading time!

  7. You ended up with a great title. One thing many don't understand is that sometimes getting people's opinions helps you to know what you DON'T want as well as what you DO want. Glad you found your way to what makes you happy. I do think it describes your style.

What wonderful quilts. I loved the fireworks. Got a bit squeamish with the worms. And fell in love with the boxes. I've never seen that quilt style worked up so well before. He did a super job!

  8. Oooh, the book sounds wonderful! Congrats on choosing a nifty title and getting it all ready for publication.

I think I have looked at Thom's pages at least six times already -- such inspiration!

  9. Though I don't like worms, I find Thom's piece very intriguing and strangely appealing. It reminds me of this shelf in London's Fortnum and Mason full of delicacies from far away countries such as insect preserves etc...

"Heart to hand embroidery" is a great title - compelling. It might encourage all the Jane Does like me to try their hearts at "art". Look forward to seing it !

    Enjoy your holidays !

A lovely holiday that gives each participant the freedom to enjoy it her/his way! I bet that week will fly.

Probably I missed something somewhere, but I am very curious to know what size your brother's BJP-quilts are. The imagination and 3-D-quality are stunning, and all of the pieces are exquisite.

The book is materializing! Wonderful! So we are looking forward not only to a how-to, but to another work of beauty to spend hours and hours with ...

    Love,
    Sabine

  11. I am also curious as to the size of Thom's pieces. They are fabulous! I *love* the fireworks!

Great title for the book. As has been said before, "Heart to Hand" really conveys your approach to bead embroidery. I know I want a copy but I am a little nervous about being able to read and enjoy it when you say there will be color pictures on every page... I've *got* to find a way around that problem!

  12. Okay, I just had a closer look at Can of Worms and Unconditional Love. The worms are remarkable and I love the use of hearts in Unconditional Love. {sigh} This is the sort of work that makes me wonder why I even bother!

  14. Thom's work is just amazing. Makes me want to pull my fabrics out and start quilting... but maybe that will be later. :- )

I love the book title, and I'm astounded that you can published so very quickly. Usually I do NOT look forward to April 15, but this year will be different!

I sure hope our Oregon weather will be wonderful and interesting for you, and not too cold. Sounds like a fabulous vacation.

  15. To All ~ Quick note from Beadbabe49's computer...

Thom's BJP quilts are 13 x 9 inches, finished size.

We're about to go bead shopping after feasting our eyes and hearts on bead embroidery, especially all of Bobbi's amazing work. She's no stranger to working in series... we got to see her hands series, Basho pieces, and more!!! Lucky us!

  16. I am glad that I stopped by to visit your blog. Those three projects are absolutely amazing. It is an eye opener for me as I have never done much with beading, but now I am starting to see some really interesting possibilities.

You are a very talented and imaginative person :-)

It is so amazing to see such a brilliant work and realize that it was made by man! I've never seen a man who loves to quilt, sew or embroider.. I always thought this activity is only for women... Just amazing!

And, a book! I'm waiting for it so much!!
Because, Robin, I don't want to upset you, but I havent' received the book you sent me in December yet, and I think the worst has happened: it was lost somewhere.. But I hope that someday it will finally arrive.

I love this beaded Valentine. I love the way you use beads. It's very different than how I use beads, but the result is great. I'm 12 and I make handmade beaded necklaces and just started a page on Etsy. Thanks for your inspiration. Cambria

  22. My oh my these are just gorgeous. This is what I aspire to be doing eventually. Since I already make beaded jewelry I am hoping it will not take too long before I can transfer my love of beading to my new interest in Quilting.
